Chavez calls for FARC to end fight

President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela is a man known for his surprising and often headline grabbing announcements but this latest one is extraordinary even by his standards. He's called on the left-wing Colombian FARC rebels to lay down their arms and release their hostages. It amounts to an all-out about-face in policy for the man who, only a few months ago, called on Colombia and the international community to stop branding the group a terrorist organisation and instead recognise the FARC as a legitimate rebel army.

Now, Mr Chavez says he believes that the era of guerrilla movements in Latin America is history and he's called on the FARC's new leader, Alfonso Cano, unilaterally to release the hundreds of hostages the group is holding. He said this could lead to a peace process between the rebels and the Colombian government.

Mr Chavez's critics will no doubt wonder whether this drastic change in policy is related to the accusations against him by the Colombian President, Alvaro Uribe, who has accused President Chavez of giving the rebels three-hundred-million dollars, something which the Venezuelan leader denies.

William Bradley Pitt was born on 18th December, 1963, in Shawnee, Oklahoma (USA). He had a happy childhood and school life, and he went to the University of Missouri to study jourlanism and advertising. At university he started acting and in 1987 he left before he took his degree. He went to Hollywood.

Life in Hollywood wasn't easy. At first he couldn't find any acting jobs, but by 1989 he started getting small TV and film roles. Then nine years ago, in 1991, he got his first main role as JD in the film Thema and Louise. He was on screen for only 14 minutes but a lot of people noticed him and he started to get bigger roles in films, such as Louis in Interview with the Vampire.




Brad Pitt is now one of Hollywood's most successful actors. His name almost certainly means a film is going to make a lot of money, but at the moment, he is interested in maiking more serious films, such as Seven Years in Tibet

Maria was born in Warsaw, Poland, on 7th November 1867. Her childhood was not happy. Her mother died when she was eleven. Four years after the death of her mother, she left school. That was a difficult time, too. She couldn't go to university because universities in Poland were not open to women, so she taught herself.


In 1891 Maria went to Paris to study physics .She did very well and got her degree in 1893.

A year after she got her physics degree she got a maths degree, too. This was only a few weeks before she met a clever young man called Pierre Curie. They got married in 1895 and Marie became Marie Curie. The Curies had two daughters: Irene, born in 1897, and Eve, born in 1904. Before the birth of Irene, Marie started working with Pierre. Together they discovered radium in 1898.



In 1903 Marie and Pierre won the Nobel Prize for Physics and they became very famous. Then, three years later, Pierre died and Marie's would changed forever.

Tokyo has some of the busiest train stations in the world. But now passengers can be assured of a friendly welcome from staff no matter how hard-pressed they are thanks to technology.

The computerised 'smile scanner' works by calculating the optimum curvature of the lips. Those with a low score are given words of advice, such as, 'you look too serious'. The idea is that workers maintain their computer-approved grins throughout the day.

Although the railway company says the smile scan system is not compulsory, all staff at the station have used it.

I don't think we've had that much opportunity to stare at our faces that closely and for that long to check our facial expressions. The employees say the scan has helped them check their facial expressions, which helped them communicate more effectively with the customers.

So far the smile scanners have been installed at 15 train stations on the company's network, leaving grumpy workers with few places to hide.

German economy recovering

US, Swiss agree UBS tax deal

But UBS said it was unable to comply because that would entail breaking Switzerland's strict bank secrecy laws. In a final settlement, the Swiss authorities have now agreed in effect to allow UBS to disclose details of 4,500 accounts to the US government.

The deal also provides a general formula for ending long-running tensions between the two countries over tax.

Jackson's birthday burial

The event will take place on August 29th, the day Jackson would have turned 51.

Some fans are planning parties on the same day to celebrate his life and music, among them film director Spike Lee who worked on the video for the Jackson hit They Don't Care About Us.

By the time he is buried it will be more than two months since Michael Jackson died. The whereabouts of his body have been kept secret.

Meanwhile police are still investigating his death and have focussed on doctors who treated him to find out what drugs were in his system.

By contrast to the spectacle of his life and death, Michael Jackson's funeral is planned as a private ceremony for family and close friends but it's bound to attract a huge amount of interest.

Bangladeshi police makeover

Bomb attack in Russia

This morning in the Ingush capital of Nazran, local police were standing to attention in the courtyard of their headquarters to receive their orders for the day, when a bomber drove a truck loaded with explosives into the gates of the building.

The blast set the building alight destroying much of it and many of the vehicles parked there. Local officials have warned that the number of dead could still rise as local apartment blocks were also hit and children were amongst the wounded. The bombing is one of the deadliest in months and damages the Kremlin's claims that the Republic's new president is bringing the region under control.

The Ingush president Yunus-Bek Yevkurov, who was still convalescing after surviving an assassination attempt in June, spoke about the attack this morning. He pointed the finger at the West saying that it was behind the blast. He said that western powers would never allow Russia to reclaim its status as a world power.

The reductions are to be achieved by introducing emissions trading, renovating houses, as well as subsidising solar panels and low-energy appliances and cars.

After leading his Democratic Party to a landslide victory in a general election, Mr Hatoyama is due to be formally confirmed as Japan's Prime Minister by Parliament next week.

Japan is keen to play a leading role at United Nations' backed talks on climate change in Copenhagen in December. Countries will try to work out a new global agreement to reduce emissions to follow the Kyoto Protocol.

Future of US space travel uncertain

Their report, commissioned by President Obama, says the current US human spaceflight programme appears to be on an unsustainable trajectory. It suggests the only way forward is to increase the funding of NASA by billions of dollars, or to co-operate with private companies now embarking on commercial space flights.

The panel says visits to Near-Earth Objects such as asteroids are far more realistic too. The experts also argue for keeping the International Space Station going till 2020, rather than pulling the plug in six years' time.

It's hard to put a financial value on a well-known corporate name but every year the marketing consultancy Interbrand has a go. For example, it claims the world's top brand Coca-Cola is currently worth $68bn, a couple of billion dollars less than 12 months earlier.

Its latest survey suggests the recession has had a considerable impact on the corporate pecking order. Car companies, such as BMW and Toyota, along with Harley Davidson motorcycles, have seen above average declines in the value of their brands - as have some luxury firms, like watchmakers Cartier and Rolex, and Armani clothing. The lesson seems to be consumers don't value expensive things they don't actually need to buy so much when times are hard.

Meanwhile, firms associated with relatively cheap products - McDonalds fast food and Kellogg's cornflakes, for example - have seen the value of their brands rise relative to others in the recession. The Google brand has also done well - maybe that's because more people are bargain-hunting on the internet.

According to the survey, the world's five most valuable brands are Coca-Cola, IBM, Microsoft, General Electric and Nokia, unchanged from last year.

Pythons, bats and giant armadillos are among the longest sleepers at over 18 hours a day. Human babies need 16 hours, and most of us probably feel we need around eight hours sleep to function well.

Professor Jerry Seigel from the University of California, Los Angeles, conducted a study of the sleep times of a broad range of animals and found that they vary widely. Some, like migrating birds, can survive long periods without sleeping at all. He believes that shows sleep evolved to conserve energy:

Jerry Seigel: 'It's animals that are needlessly active that will not survive, but animals that are most efficient and use their waking time to do vital functions, and are otherwise asleep that will survive.'

Sleep helps make best use of limited resources. In humans, when we're awake, our brain accounts for 20% of the energy we use when just sitting around. Sleeping also makes us less likely to get injured and less likely to be detected by predators.

The Royal Society says that by the middle of the century the global population may reach 9 billion. And feeding those extra mouths is a major challenge for the planet, compounded by the spectre of global warming.

Professor David Baulcombe of Cambridge University, who led the research, says a billion people are already malnourished. Professor Baulcombe says the money the government should plough into crop science is needed immediately. If we wait ten years, he says, it may be too late. The genetic manipulation he refers to could produce crop strains resistant to disease, drought and salinity.

But the issue of genetically modified crops is still something of a hot potato, despite the technology being already used by millions of farmers. Environmental groups say the usefulness of GM crops has not been proven, and the threat they pose by letting altered genes spread into other plants is significant.

Voters in the American states of New Jersey and Virginia will be going to the polls to choose new state governors. This row's over a campaign advert used by a Republican candidate in New Jersey. But it's not his rival politicians who are getting angry, it's the comedians who've had a starring role, without giving their permission.

The advert features part of a Michael Palin sketch from Monty Python's Flying Circus. He asks viewers if they've ever suffered from deja vu... then repeats the question again... and again... and... you get the idea.

The campaign plan was to show up Chris Christie's rival candidate Jon Corzine, who's got a reputation for repeated attempts to impose higher charges on motorways. But Michael Palin's called the whole thing a 'terrible mistake', and his former co-star, Terry Jones, described it as 'totally outrageous'. They're threatening legal action, pointing out Christie himself's a former lawyer who should have done his copyright homework. Michael Palin couldn't resist cracking a joke though, saying Christie had picked the wrong Palin, and should have been after the backing of US politician Sarah Palin.

Despite all the comic drama, Chris Christie is expected to win the vote in New Jersey, even though President Obama made two campaign stops there on Sunday.

Business in Africa to change

In the past there has really only been one way to describe the climate towards business almost anywhere in Africa - distinctly hostile. Mountains of forms to fill in, complex, sometimes contradictory regulations and bored, uninterested civil servants. But, says one of the authors of this report, Sylvia Solf, change is on the way.

'Over the past three years this trend has been reversing and this year, two thirds of the reforms globally have been taking place in developing countries and in Africa more than half of the countries of the continent have reformed. This is really a very new development and it's a very exciting development.'

Regulations are being scrapped. One stop shops at which businesses can be registered are being set up. Many forms can now be accessed online. At the frontline of these reforms is the island of Mauritius, which is already as easy to operate in as many developed countries. Rwanda, Liberia and Burkina Faso have also made real progress to improve the climate for business.

But many other African nations, among them some of the poorest countries on earth, like Chad, Congo Brazzaville and Swaziland, have made no moves in this direction. Some, like Tanzania, have even gone backwards. Extracting bribes from businessmen to get round the obstacles may be one reason why some of the continent's leaders have failed to take the path of reform.

New guidelines for fighting HIV

At the moment, four million people around the world receive anti-retroviral drugs. There's another five million who need them but don't get them.

The WHO recommendations on when to start treatment for HIV would mean an extra three to five million people would be added to that waiting list. The WHO wants people who have HIV to start drugs before their immune systems get so weak they start displaying symptoms. A study recently published in the medical journal The Lancet showed starting treatment at the newly recommended level could increase survival by nearly 70%.

It would also add significantly to the cost on health care systems. In South Africa, which has one of the biggest HIV burdens in the world, currently fewer than half of the people who should be receiving HIV drugs get them.

Poor health infrastructure is a common problem for nearly all developing countries. Putting HIV-positive people on drugs earlier would significantly reduce the cost to health systems of treating opportunistic infections - illnesses which take hold while the immune system is weak. It would also greatly improve life expectancy of HIV patients, with repercussions for families and the workforce.

The WHO is still working out how much it would cost countries to improve their treatment regimes, but it won't be cheap.

Catching loneliness from the lonely

It's a medical paradox. People who feel lonely can spread the emotion to others - much like a virus. After poring over data collected from nearly 5,000 people, the researchers concluded that loneliness is more than just a personal feeling, it's an infectious mental condition. This was a statistical rather than medical study, so it doesn't explain how the contagion happens. But what it did find was that the friends of a person describing themselves as lonely were 52% more likely to become lonely themselves, and that their friends were at an increased risk too, even if they didn't know the lonely person.

The study's authors suggest this may be down to the way lonely people behave. A tendency to be wary or mistrustful of others can make their loneliness a self-fulfilling prophecy, as it may drive friends away. This much may seem obvious, but the study also hints that this behaviour can rub off on other people, painting a rather bleak picture of lonely people driving each other into ever greater isolation. Its advice to the lonely - surround yourself with a network of friends, as long as they're not lonely too.

Copenhagen summit opens

34,000 people have tried to get accredited for this extraordinary meeting - an unprecedented demand.

Hopes are high here that a deal can be done to lower emissions and raise cash to help poor countries adapt to climate change and obtain clean energy. The question is whether that agreement will be strong enough to meet the expectations of those children of the future.

China's economy is growing

China's economy has recovered earlier and more strongly than any other. This latest data is further evidence of that trend. The rise in industrial output confirms what factory owners have been saying for some time now, that customers have been restocking their inventories and confidence is returning.

There are still question marks though over the stability of the recovery. The property sector is showing signs of overheating. The government this week announced measures to try to cool it. At the same time officials decided to extend tax subsidies for purchases of small vehicles and appliances suggesting that some here still believe Chinese manufacturers need government support.

Growth was strongest in heavy industries such as coal, steel, power generation and automobiles. Consumer prices rose in November for the first time since February. But the rise was small and probably reflected higher food prices caused by early snowstorms which destroyed crops and disrupted transport.

Earthquake in Haiti

UN officials said some 250 people worked in the headquarters of the peacekeeping mission which has collapsed. They said the head of the mission was inside the building and remains unaccounted for, but the earthquake struck around 5 o'clock in the afternoon, so it's not clear how many others were still present.

UN troops have surrounded the ruins and are trying to rescue those trapped in the rubble; other United Nations buildings have also been damaged, but details are scarce because of disrupted communications. The peacekeeping force numbers around 11,000 people, including civilian personnel; it's located in different parts of the country, and was deployed in 2004 to bring order following an armed insurrection against then president Jean Bertrand Aristide.

The blow to the UN's services on the ground may slow relief and rescue efforts for the Haitian people, but its humanitarian department is sending emergency response teams and releasing emergency funds. The Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon has said he's shocked at the scale of the devastation and has made initial contacts to encourage a coordinated international response.

Easyjet accused of breaking labour laws

The budget airline is accused of breaking strict labour laws and is now being pursued by the state prosecutor for millions of euros in unpaid social security and health insurance contributions. The budget airline insists that its staff were hired under British contracts and therefore were not subject to French rules. Orly airport, it claims, was merely a rest area for its workers and it was the planes themselves, and not France that served as their workplaces.

The French authorities point out however that most of the Easyjet staff lived and paid their taxes in France and many were working solely on internal flights between Paris and Nice.

Nasa robot stuck on Mars

ناسا، آژانس فضایی آمریکا تصمیم گرفته است به تلاش برای نجات دادن یکی از روبات هایش که در شن های نرم کره مریخ گیر کرده است پایان دهد. این روبات که Spirit Mars نام دارد، از مه مه سال 2009 در سطح کره مریخ گیر کرده و تلاش های دانشمندان ناسا برای آزاد کردنش تا کنون بی نتیجه مانده است.

Dug deep into the soil and with its wheels spinning, Spirit has had to accept the inevitable - it's never going to move again. In its six years on the planet, this robotic geologist has taken thousands of images and found evidence in the rocks of a wetter, warmer past in Mars' history. Its mission will now have to change. As a static station, it can still study the planet's atmosphere and deep interior. The priority currently is to position its solar panels to get as much energy from the Sun to keep it alive through the coming winter.

Even so, Nasa expects Spirit to get so low on power that it'll go into hibernation, cutting communications with Earth for perhaps six months.

Whatever the future holds for Spirit, its mission has been an outstanding success. When it landed on the Red Planet in January 2004, no-one was really sure how long it would continue working in what is a cold and dusty environment. Three months was one initial goal.

In the event, it just kept on rolling. And its twin robot, Opportunity, which landed a few weeks after Spirit in a different part of Mars, continues to rove freely to this day.

Nasa has spent more than $900 million on the project but shows no sign of giving up on these tenacious robots. The rovers are, though, experiencing gradual wear and tear. Even before Spirit got trapped, one of its wheels had failed. And Nasa says it's just a matter of time before both robots break down completely.

Egypt win Africa Cup of Nations

Mohamed Gedo's winning goal with less than five minutes remaining provided the 2010 Cup of Nations with a dramatic end. But this competition will probably be remembered for what happened before it had started.

The deadly attack on the Togo team bus dominated headlines across the world. The team went home and then on the eve of the final, CAF, the governing body of African football took the controversial decision to ban Togo from the next two tournaments because of political interference.

In between there's been some exciting football, a few surprise results, played out in front of enthusiastic crowds, inside impressive stadiums.

Egypt have been worthy winners. For the third successive Cup of Nations their attractive, clever brand of football has been too good for their opponents. Their failure to qualify for the World Cup in South Africa is a mystery.

Meanwhile, Ghana's performance in reaching the final, without so many of their best players, is a sign of their growing stature in international football.

Hosting such a major sports event was a big challenge for Angola. The local organisers talk of their pride at what's been achieved despite the low numbers of foreign fans, who stayed away because Angola was too expensive.

Ukraine and Russia argue about spies

Ukraine says that the five alleged Russian spies were caught with a camera concealed inside a pen, other espionage equipment and $2000 - a reported bribe for a Ukrainian contact.

The head of Ukraine's security service says that the five were trying to obtain military secrets. Four of them have been expelled from Ukraine, while the fifth has been detained.

Russia's security service, the FSB, has confirmed the detention, but denied the Ukrainian version of events. The FSB said its actions were a response to the recruitment of Russians by the Ukrainian security services.

The mutual recriminations come at a highly sensitive time. Just two weeks ago, Russia sent an ambassador to Ukraine after a five month absence. And on Sunday, Ukrainians will vote in an election to choose a successor to the outgoing President, Viktor Yushchenko.

Mr Yushchenko's time in office has been marked by strained relations with Moscow, and his departure was being seen as an opportunity for an improvement in ties between the two countries.

In Germany, if you think your financial advisor has been giving you bad advice and messing up your investments, you can complain to the regulators, you can go to the police. But in Bavaria, one group of pensioners stands accused of employing a much more direct method of registering their dissatisfaction. They're on trial for kidnapping their financial advisor and holding him hostage.

Four senior citizens, aged between 63 and 79, had invested nearly three and a half million dollars in the US property market and lost it all in the sub-prime mortgage meltdown. They'd concluded that the man who'd handled the investment should now reimburse them.

According to prosecutors, last summer the pensioner posse plus one accompliceabducted the financial advisor outside his house, tied him, gagged him, put him in a box and transported him in the boot of a car 450 kilometres to a lakeside retreat.

He claims to have spent four days locked in the cellar there and to have been tortured. After agreeing to their demands, the prisoner was allowed to send a fax to Switzerland arranging payment. He concealed the phrase 'call the Police' in the text and the alarm was raised. Soon after a crack team of commandos came to the rescue.

On the opening day of the trial, the 74 year old alleged ringleader of the gang avoided using the word 'kidnap'. He said he and his co-defendants had only wanted to treat their guest to a couple of days holiday in Bavaria.

Greek debts threaten the euro

This summit was supposed to be a chance for Europe's prime ministers and presidents to discuss ways to promote growth and jobs, but with the euro single currency facing its worst ever crisis, the original agenda has long since been scrapped. Instead, all the focus will be on how to shore up Greece's precarious finances. Though the Greek economy is relatively small, its membership of the euro zone means its fate is wedded to that of the stronger currencies in the single currency.

For years Greek governments have spent more than they earned in taxes and borrowed to make up the shortfall. That public debt now threatens to engulf the economy. Greece's new socialist government has introduced some drastic austerity measures, such as a public sector pay freeze and fuel price increases to try to reduce the deficit, but the prospect of a default has prompted huge falls on the Greek stock market. The uncertainty has spread to other big euro debtors like Spain and Portugal. It's this contagion that most worries euro zone leaders as it risks destroying confidence in the euro as a whole.

So what to do? By underwriting the Greeks' debts they hope to stop the financial turbulence spreading and protect themselves in the process. But such largesse is not without risk. If they do end up having to pay Greece's debts, the leaders meeting here know it will be both expensive and unpopular with the voters back home.

'Junk' bonuses now worth billions

The five billion dollar pool of so-called 'Toxic Debt' was originally described as a way of forcing Credit Suisse investment bankers to "eat their own cooking".

The bank lost seven billion dollars last year, in large part because of the investment decisions of some of its best paid staff. They'd put money into complicated financial products linked to risky commercial debt secured, on among other things, a Japanese shopping centre, an American supermarket chain and other commercial property that had plunged in value.

At the height of the financial crisis, many people thought these investments were worthless. To Credit Suisse, it seemed right to share them out as annual bonuses among the people who had apparently got things so wrong. But as confidence has returned to the market, it's become clear that the toxic asset pool wasn't nearly as toxic as had been thought.

The toxic bonus fund has soared in value by 72 percent. That compares with a 60 percent increase in the value of Credit Suisse shares over the same period, or a mere 19 percent rise in America's Dow Jones index.

The bankers may well feel they've earned their money though. Credit Suisse is safely back in profit and unlike its rivals at UBS, Credit Suisse didn't take a bail out from the Swiss Government.

Gold for Canada as Olympics end

The ceremony was marked by Canadians making gentle fun of themselves. In a nod toa glitch in the opening ceremony, part of the Olympic cauldron which couldn't be lit two weeks ago was set alight to kick off the closing. The ceremony also featured a comic parade of Canadian stereotypes including Mounties, canoes and moose-antler hats for members of the audience.

In his closing remarks IOC (International Olympics Committee) President Jacques Rogge called the games 'excellent' and 'very friendly' and said the Canadian organisers had done an outstanding job.

The head of Vancouver's organising committee received a deafening cheer from the 60,000 spectators as he acknowledged Canada's ice-hockey team that won the final gold medal of the games shortly before the ceremony. John Furlong also said the games had lifted the Canadian mood in a way no one could have anticipated.

The Canadian officials handed the Olympic flag to organisers of the next Winter Olympics in Sochi who invited the world to Russia in 2014 with simultaneous performances inside the Canadian stadium and from Sochi itself.

Sale of Vasari's papers suddenly stopped

در ایتالیا، فروش نوشته ها و آثار جیورجیو واساری، که بنیانگذار تاریخ هنر اروپایی محسوب می شود، در آخرین لحظه متوقف شد. هدف از فروش این نوشته ها توسط اداره مالیات برای وصول طلب های مالیاتی از یک کنت ایتالیایی بود که وارث این نوشته هاست. ولی خانواده وی اعتراض کرده بودند که قیمتی که برای فروش تعیین شده بیش از حد پائین است.

Giorgio Vasari lived in the 16th century and was an acclaimed artist himself. But it was in chronicling the lives of other Renaissance artists that he earned his reputation as the founder of European art history. His most famous work, called Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors and Architects, contains letters to and from Michaelangelo, local rulers and popes.

The papers were seized by Italy's tax authorities in lieu of unpaid debts by the Italian count who owned them. Some reports say he tried to sell them for $200 million to a Russian gas billionaire, who then apparently died. The count's family deny this. Now an auction to sell the papers for a starting price of three and a half million dollars has been stopped, because the family say that's too cheap. A judge in Tuscany will now decide if a higher price is more suitable. One expert has said the archive is worth more like $13 million.

The auction was stopped with just 15 minutes to spare, when lawyers for Vasari's heirs stepped in. The tax authorities said they had to accept the auctioneer's decision to halt the sale.

Whatever the final price and whoever buys them, there is one hitch: the papers are housed in Vasari's former home in Tuscany and cannot be moved, by order of the Italian Ministry of Culture.

Jeff Bridges won for 'Crazy Heart', Sandra Bullock for The Blind Side. In Christoph Waltz supporters won roles for Inglorious Basterds and Mo'Nique for Precious.

The British nominees, Helen Mirren, Colin Firth and Kerry Mulligan went home empty-handed.

Sausages linked to heart disease

The team from Harvard University looked at 20 studies involving more than a million people from around the world. They found that eating the equivalent of one sausage a day appeared to increase the likelihood of heart disease, the leading cause of death in the UK, by over 40%. The regular eating of processed meat also raised the risk of diabetes by nearly 20%.

But those who enjoy red meat can draw some comfort from the report. The researchers did not find any heightened risk of heart disease or diabetes from eating unprocessed red meat, like beef, lamb or pork - even in larger quantities.

Writing in the journal Circulation, they suggest it may be

the salt and preservatives used in processed meat that are behind the increased risk of disease, rather than the fat or cholesterol content which so often gets the blame.

New finance rules for European football

UEFA's ruling committee gave the new financial regulations its unanimous approval. After a phasing in period they'll come into force at the beginning of the 2012 season.

UEFA is determined to limit the lavish spending which has become such a feature of the game. A recent report found that half of Europe's leading clubs were losing money, and 20 per cent faced huge deficits.

Under the new rules they will have to break even. Clubs will not be allowed to spend more money than they generate. Rich benefactors will no longer be allowed to subsidise expensive transfers and salaries. Those clubs which consistently operate outside the parameterswill be barred from European competitions.

Individual national associations will be mainly responsible for making sure clubs follow the new policy.

New research on the power of smiling

There are any number of sayings about the power of the smile. 'Peace begins with a smile.' 'A smile is the universal welcome.' 'Life is short but a smile only takes a second.' All good advice. But it may not be as simple as that. According to new research, if you want to make a good impression when you meet people, it's not just that you smile. It's how you smile.

The study was carried out by the Go Group, a business support organisation based in Scotland. They looked at people's reactions to different grins. They found that responses varied considerably.

Through this they say they have found three types of smile to avoid: The first is 'The Enthusiast', very wide, all teeth showing, possible evidence that you can have too much of a good thing. Then there is the 'Big Freeze', a fixed grin that looks practised and fake. Finally comes 'The Robot', a small, thin smile, lacking in warmth.

The group also warns about smiling too quickly, saying it can make you look insincere. The best smile, they say, is slower and floods naturally across the whole face.

How good we are
A little boy went into a drug store, reached for a soda carton and pulled it over to the telephone. He climbed onto the carton so that he could reach the buttons on the phone and proceeded to punch in seven digits.
The store-owner observed and listened to the conversation: The boy asked, "Lady, Can you give me the job of cutting your lawn? The woman replied, "I already have someone to cut my lawn."
"Lady, I will cut your lawn for half the price of the person who cuts your lawn now." replied boy. The woman responded that she was very satisfied with the person who was presently cutting her lawn.
The little boy found more perseverance and offered, "Lady, I'll even sweep your curb and your sidewalk, so on Sunday you will have the prettiest lawn in all of Palm beach, Florida." Again the woman answered in the negative.
With a smile on his face, the little boy replaced the receiver. The store-owner, who was listening to all, walked over to the boy and said,
"Son... I like your attitude; I like that positive spirit and would like to offer you a job."
The little boy replied, "No thanks, I was just checking my performance with the job I already have. I am the one who is working for that lady, I was talking to!"

پسر کوچکي وارد داروخانه شد، کارتن جوش شيرني را به سمت تلفن هل داد. بر روي کارتن رفت تا دستش به دکمه هاي تلفن برسد و شروع کرد به گرفتن شماره اي هفت رقمي.
مسئول دارو خانه متوجه پسر بود و به مکالماتش گوش داد. پسرک پرسيد،" خانم، مي توانم خواهش کنم کوتاه کردن چمن ها را به من بسپاريد؟" زن پاسخ داد، کسي هست که اين کار را برايم انجام مي دهد."
پسرک گفت:"خانم، من اين کار را نصف قيمتي که او مي گيرد انجام خواهم داد". زن در جوابش گفت که از کار اين فرد کاملا راضي است.
پسرک بيشتر اصرار کرد و پيشنهاد داد،" خانم، من پياده رو و جدول جلوي خانه را هم برايتان جارو مي کنم، در اين صورت شما در يکشنبه زيباترين چمن را در کل شهر خواهيد داشت." مجددا زنان پاسخش منفي بود".
پسرک در حالي که لبخندي بر لب داشت، گوشي را گذاشت. مسئول داروخانه که به صحبت هاي او گوش داده بود به سمتش رفت و گفت: "پسر...از رفتارت خوشم مياد؛ به خاطر اينکه روحيه خاص و خوبي داري دوست دارم کاري بهت بدم"
پسر جوان جواب داد،" نه ممنون، من فقط داشتم عملکردم رو مي سنجيدم، من همون کسي هستم که براي اين خانوم کار مي کنه".

The Buzzard, the Bat, and the Bumblebee

If you put a buzzard in a pen six or eight feet square and entirely open at the top, the bird, in spite of his ability to fly, will be an absolute prisoner. The reason is that a buzzard always begins a flight from the ground with a run of ten or twelve feet. Without space to run, as is his habit, he will not even attempt to fly, but will remain a prisoner for life in a small jail with no top.
